Tempted In the Wilderness – How Jesus Overcame the Devil
To whom do you belong?
Sometimes we are lead by spiritual things and other times by earthly things. This concept may not mean much if you only think in the earthly realm and to some I may sound like someone from another dimension. That’s okay! In biblical terms i’m talking about life, not death. Where will you spend your eternal life? In heaven or hell. Good and evil is all around us. We must chose whom we will obey, God, namely Jesus Christ or self.
What is the sin nature?
How easy it is to give into temptation when we are afforded an opportunity to gain something, be it good or bad? Men and women have different desires and we sometimes fall prey to temptation. It starts at a young age I think. From the time we are born into this world we have a sin nature. So that if something is put before you as a small child, you tend to touch it and play with it. Your parents will ask you not to touch their keys, but you touch it anyway, we break it or spit up all over it. Maybe you remember that? That is the sin nature. We can help it because that is how we were born.
Jesus led into the wilderness
In Matthew chapter 4, Jesus is led into the wilderness by the Spirit to be tempted by the Devil. Jesus had just been baptized and was beginning his ministry. He fasted forty days and forty nights. I have fasted for four days before that was difficult enough. The thing about fasting is the longer you fast, it seems the stronger you become spiritually. The first day of my fast was the hardest. Especially if you are like me and like food!
Do not love this world
The Bible mentions Jesus was hungry after the forty days. Not only that, he was being tempted (temptation) by Satan. Most of us may think we would give in to anything at that point. However I think Jesus was pointing out that if you fasted by turning from your desires of this earthly world, you could achieve anything spiritually or physically. The message is we are not to love this dying world. It is totally corrupt. Jesus turned His back on the world and focus on God the Father.
Jesus is tempted of the Devil
When Satan tempted Jesus with food, Jesus said that man shall not live by bread alone but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. This example shows that if you make it a habit of rejecting temptation you will be stronger spiritually. We must feed on the word of God in order to overcome this world and its desires. Jesus wants us to be like Him and that is a good thing.
Resist the Devil and he will flee from you
The biggest temptation was when Satan took Jesus up to a very high mountain and looking down on the world and stated, “All this I will give to you if you bow down and worship me.” Many of us would not pass that test. We are filled with all sorts of greed, which the bible calls idolatry. It does make you wonder if you would fall for the temptation. That is why we need the word of God. It provides the strength we need to overcome. That is why we need to be filled with the Spirit of God and to pray always. Thank God that Jesus is strong. His response was “Away with you, Satan! For it is written, you shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only shall you serve.” What an awesome answer. It has strength and conviction. That is how we are to answer the Devil. We don’t want to be on the fence when it comes to temptation. Jesus resisted the Devil and you and I can do the same. The next verse mentions, “Then the Devil left him and angels came and ministered to him.” So the Devil fled. The bible says to resist the Devil and he will flee from you.
God called us to overcome
There are always people in our lives that tempt us into doing wickedness. Be very careful detach yourselves from them. Don’t allow Satan to get a stronghold in your life. The Bible says resists them (The Devil or Devils), stay away from them, turn away, don’t associate with them. They aim to bring you down. Fasting is resisting temptation and helps you become stronger. I’m not telling you to put yourself in an unhealthy situation. It not really about food. It is about resisting the temptations of this world. God called us to be overcomers. I hope this post has bless you. Thank you so much for your readership and God bless you.
